The first thing you need to do is figure out where you want your outlets. This may seem like a simple task, but it can be tricky if you are not sure what you are looking for. There are a few things to keep in mind when deciding where to put your outlets.
The first is the type of wiring that is being used. If you are using standard copper wiring, then you will need to have at least two inches of clearance around the outlet box so that the wires can be properly connected. If you are using plastic-sheathed wire, then you will only need one inch of clearance.
Another thing to consider is how many devices you plan on plugging into each outlet. If you have a lot of devices that require power, then you will need to make sure that each outlet is spaced far enough apart to accommodate them. You should also take into account the size of the devices. Larger devices, like a refrigerator or air conditioner, will require more power than smaller devices and may need their own dedicated outlet.
Once you have decided where your outlets should go, it’s time to start installing them. The first step is to remove the old cover plate from the wall. Once it’s removed, you can see the wiring behind it. If you are using standard copper wiring, there will be two wires coming out of the wall – one black and one white. If you are using plastic-sheathed wire, there will only be one wire coming out of the wall – the white one.
Once you have identified the wires, it’s time to start connecting them to the outlet. The black wire goes on the brass screw and the white wire goes on the silver screw. If your wiring is reversed, don’t worry – there is a way to flip the switch on the outlet so that it will work with your wiring. Simply use a small flathead screwdriver to press down on the black tab near the top of the outlet and then reattach the cover plate.
Once all of your connections are made, it’s time to put everything back together. Replace the old cover plate with a new one and make sure that it’s securely attached to the wall.
